Thornsett Brewery & Hopyard Founder

In early 2016 I started my home brewing journey in my little flat in New Mills, High Peak. I have always enjoyed tasting different styles of ales and wondering how a craft ale was made. It was this curiosity and passion for beer that encouraged me to create Thornsett brewery & hop yard.

I have always been proud of my local community and the small businesses within the High Peak and this was the inspiration behind my labels. I used a local artist called Clare Allan (clareallanart.com) to bring both personal and also specific memories about New Mills to life and show everyone what we’re all about! After a lot of researching and test batching I finally came up with 4 solid beers and the next step was finding a place to go big!

My sister & brother in law run a dairy farm just out side of New Mills, called Thornsett Fields Farms. After months of waiting on planning permission, I was finally given the go ahead to bring an old, disused hay bail barn back to life by turning it into my new Brewery. This process of turning something old into something new encouraged me to consider other ways to reduce waste and be as sustainable and eco friendly as possible. I am therefore really proud to say that my brewery is completely off grid as it is ran solely on a combination of renewable energy sources - solar and gas. Along side this, all of my beer is produced with the natural spring water than runs through the farm.

And guess what?…it doesn’t stop there! Whilst waiting for planning permission to be granted I had a lot of extra time to think of even more ways to make my brewery more sustainable. It was during this time that the idea of growing my own hops on the farm came to life. Il be honest, this was something that I didn’t expect to do well when constantly battling strong northerly winds and the good old British weather. But with dedication and a lot of hard work I had a successful first year and I am so excited to be certified by the British Hop Society as the first Organic hop farm in the North of England. I have many exciting plans for the future of the hop yard from not only using them in my own beers but selling hops to other breweries and home brewers as well as florists.

Thank you for taking the time to read my back story and I hope you enjoy following my journey and drinking my beer as much I do!
